There seemed to be a kind of ritualistic rhythm to all of this. Alan is from a generation of performers who have an aversion to putting on their tux pants until just before they go on stage (which is why I wound up photographing a lot of them in their boxer shorts). During all this time, Alan had a few cups of coffee, smoked some cigars, nursed a couple of Tanquerays over ice, chatted with friends who dropped by, and studied his notes for the show. Everything he intended to do that night was jotted down on one page of a yellow legal pad.
